The construction of a new Sixth Form Annex for Clifton High School involved working within a live school environment, requiring careful planning to minimise disruption.
The small site area demanded efficient spatial management, while daily liaison with the client’s operational team ensured safety and project continuity. The site’s restrictive access necessitated the offloading of larger materials on an adjacent street using a telehandler.
Security was paramount, and hard boundary hoarding was established to prevent unauthorised access from the school grounds.
Our approach focused on proactive communication and collaboration with the client and project team. Daily coordination ensured operational safety, minimal disruption, and efficient progress. Careful logistical planning enabled seamless delivery of materials and execution of works within the restricted site conditions.
The project included the construction of a dynamic Sixth Form Common Room, blending traditional materials with contemporary forms.
A glazed link corridor and spiral staircase enclosure connected the new build to the existing listed building. The double-height Common Room featured a café floor at ground level and a balcony mezzanine above. Associated works included the refurbishment of the lower ground floor and ground floor link within the existing building.
The project incorporated energy-efficient systems such as LED lighting with passive infrared (PIR) sensors, an air source heat pump, and a mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) system. A green roof and hard and soft landscaping integrated the building seamlessly into the school grounds.
The project was completed successfully within a 48-week programme, delivering a modern, functional, and sustainable Sixth Form Annex. The new facility provides an inspiring environment for students, combining contemporary design with practical functionality.
