The project involved the Phase 1 refurbishment of the University of Bristol's Music School at the Victoria Rooms, a Grade II* listed building.
The challenge was to carry out the refurbishment with great sensitivity to the building’s historical significance, ensuring that all works preserved its character while upgrading the porters' lodge, performance hall, and communal areas within a tight 8-week schedule.
We adopted a careful and sympathetic approach, working closely with heritage consultants to ensure that all materials and methods were appropriate for a Grade II* listed building. Our team prioritised meticulous planning and coordination to meet the tight timeline.
The refurbishment involved hacking off damp-damaged plaster and replastering with Limelite renovating plaster, a material chosen for its compatibility with heritage structures.
We also completed redecoration using heritage colours, installed suspended ceilings, upgraded electrical lighting and power, and carried out carpentry, floor coverings, and furniture upholstery.
Additionally, we addressed drainage issues and conducted essential roofing works, including installing Kee-Klamp edge protection and replacing cat ladders, ensuring the building’s functionality and safety.
The project was completed on time and within budget, delivering a refreshed and functional space honouring the building’s historical integrity. The refurbished areas now offer an improved environment for staff and students, enhancing the overall experience at the Music School.
