Transforming the former Students’ Union offices on Levels 3 and 4 of the Richmond Building to additional space for the International Foundation Programme required a comprehensive reconfiguration to be completed within a tight 12-week programme.
The project coincided with graduation ceremonies and was set within a live university environment, adding complexity. Careful planning and coordination were essential to minimise disruption to nearby offices, seminar rooms, exam spaces and the University Swimming Pool while ensuring the space was ready for students returning in September.
To maintain the programme, we focused on forward planning, proactive communication, and close collaboration with stakeholders. Building strong relationships with the client and the project team ensured quick decision-making and a seamless execution of works.
The project included:
The demolition of internal walls
Reconfiguration of spaces
Upgrading of fire-stopping
Addition of a new mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) system to both floors, along with new controls
Installation of new walls, joinery, flooring, and decorations
Significant alterations were made to the mechanical & electrical (M&E) services to support the updated layout, complemented by the addition of acoustic walls, glazing, and specialist acoustic stopping.
This approach ensured the refurbished spaces met the university’s requirements for functionality and modernity while enhancing acoustic performance.
The project was delivered within the 12-week programme, on time and budget. The completed spaces were handed over to a satisfied client and were ready for use by students at the start of the academic year.
