The project involved the refurbishment of a Grade II* listed hall of residence at the University of Bristol’s Clifton Campus.
The task was to repurpose the basement area from former living accommodation into a modern student lounge and study space.
The challenge was to complete the transformation within an 8-week window while adhering to strict listed building regulations, requiring sensitive handling of traditional materials and techniques to preserve the building's historical integrity.
Our approach was underpinned by meticulous planning and close collaboration with the client and stakeholders.
All works were carefully executed in line with the listed building consent obtained by the client's team, ensuring all refurbishment work complied with heritage guidelines. The project required careful stripping out, followed by plumbing alterations and electrical re-wiring.
Our team worked in phases, prioritising the use of traditional materials such as lime mortars and plasters while coordinating with local artisans to match existing joinery and finishes.
This strategy allowed us to maintain the historical essence of the space while introducing modern functionality.
We executed the refurbishment with a focus on blending modern design with historical preservation. The project involved light strip-out work, followed by the installation of updated plumbing and electrical systems.
To comply with the listed building consent, we utilised traditional materials, including lime mortars, plasters, and historically accurate joinery. Notably, we sourced locally crafted, fully certified panelled fire doors that seamlessly integrated with the existing architecture. The refurbished space was then finished with new decorations, applied artwork, and modern energy-efficient LED light fittings.
Additionally, we installed suspended acoustic ceiling rafts and provided loose furniture to create a comfortable and inspiring student environment.
The project was completed ahead of the academic year, with a 2-week mutually agreed extension to accommodate additional lath and lime plastering required for ceiling works following the removal of a dividing wall, ensuring quality and durability while respecting the original timeline for most areas.
The project was completed successfully, transforming the basement into a vibrant, functional student lounge and study area.
Despite the added complexity of maintaining historical integrity, the work was delivered on time and within budget.
The finished space now serves as a comfortable and inspiring environment for students, blending modern amenities with the building's historical charm.
