Challenge

The University of Bristol required extensive refurbishment across four upper floors of Senate House, with a fixed budget and a tight 16-week schedule.

The challenge was to create a series of functional and welcoming spaces, including:

A student's living room
Global student lounge
Wellbeing service centre
Muslim prayer rooms
An upgrade of two W.C. areas

While using our extensive experience of working within live environments minimisingdisruption to the live lower ground-floor hospitality space and first-floor reception.

Coordination was crucial as the project timeline coincided with key university events, including open days and exams.

Approach

We adopted a collaborative approach, working closely with the client stakeholders, project team, and supply chain partners.

Careful planning and coordination with the University allowed us to deliver the project within the fixed budget and tight timeline, including out-of-hours and weekend work to meet the deadline.

The refurbishment involved the strip out of areas refurbished and extensive M&E upgrades, including life safety systems and access control.

We built new partitions to create distinct spaces and refurbished parquet flooring alongside installing vinyl and carpet tiles.

New door sets, glazed partitions, and bespoke furniture were fitted with decorative finishes.

Special features included creating a sensory room with specialist equipment and installing AV systems. To enhance the user experience, bespoke graphics and standardised wayfinding were integrated throughout the entire building.

Sustainability

Sustainability was embedded in the project through the reuse and refurbishment of existing parquet flooring and the implementation of energy-efficient M&E systems including LED lighting. These efforts aligned with the University’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint while enhancing the functionality of its spaces.

Results

The project was completed on time in September 2021, ready for the start of the academic term.

The refurbished spaces met the University’s goals, providing functional, welcoming environments for students and staff.

Despite the complexity of the work, the project was delivered within budget and to a high standard of quality.

Special design features

The project included forming a sensory room equipped with specialist sensory equipment, enhancing the well-being services offered at the University. Refurbishing the previously covered parquet wood flooring added a touch of historical character to the modernised spaces.
