The University of Bath required the refurbishment and reconfiguration of two laboratories within the 5 West building—Laboratory 2.52 and, later, Laboratory 2.37.
The challenge was to modernise these spaces into state-of-the-art Wet and Dry Laboratories, offices, and storage rooms, all while meeting strict scientific standards and accommodating the complex demands of laboratory environments.
The project also involved significant upgrades to mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems, requiring careful planning and execution within a live university setting.
Our approach prioritised collaboration with the University's team, allowing us to anticipate and address challenges efficiently. We maintained open lines of communication and used meticulous planning to ensure the seamless execution of both laboratory refurbishments.
For Laboratory 2.52, we began by stripping out existing fixtures, finishes, and systems to prepare for a complete transformation. We installed new partitions, an Epoxy resin lab floor, modern M&E systems, and bespoke laboratory furniture.
The project also included installing fume cupboards, medical gas supplies, and acoustic upgrades to the Chiller room.
Following the success of 2.52, we were invited to negotiate and refurbish Laboratory 2.37 with a similar scope, including new vinyl flooring, upgraded electrical and plumbing systems, and high-spec lab equipment.
To enhance safety and functionality, both labs were equipped with new fire door sets, access control, and Building Management Systems (BMS).
Practical completion was achieved in December 2023, with both laboratories successfully transformed into cutting-edge scientific environments.
The project was delivered on time and within the projected budget, with further additional works being scheduled for completion shortly, reflecting the client’s satisfaction with our work.
