Refurbishing this Grade II listed building posed significant challenges due to the sensitive nature of the works and the need to preserve the structure’s historical integrity.
Major internal structural upgrades and fit out works, combined with a live university environment where students and staff remained on campus, required detailed planning and careful communication.
With a tight 13-week programme, it was imperative to complete the project on time to ensure the spaces were ready for the new term.
To deliver the project within the required timeframe, the team prioritised early design sign-off by building strong relationships with the client, stakeholders, and end users.
This collaborative approach enabled prompt decision-making and ensured the smooth progression of works throughout the programme.
The project involved uplifting existing floorboards to install supporting fitch beams and steel plates as part of floor strengthening works, facilitating the installation of new sound booths.
Alterations to mechanical & electrical (M&E) services included the installation of new circuits to the sound booths and upgraded LED lighting.
Flooring updates included new carpet tiles throughout and dance-grade flooring in the newly created dance studio.
The works also included the installation of five new sound booths in various rooms within the building (installation undertaken by others), which required close and clear communication with a third party to ensure design and installation timescales met program and client requirements.
The refurbishment was completed on time and budget within the 13-week programme. The updated Centre for Music was handed over to a satisfied client, ready for students to use at the start of the academic year.
